Happy Spring! We got a nice dose of spring weather this week and hope that continues into spring break for all families to enjoy.
Highlights of the Week:
- ELAL – students worked through their second persuasive pieces on their own chosen topic.
- Math – We started an area and perimeter math project this week called Project Petting Zoo. Students are tasked with choosing animals and attractions that fit within a specific budget and certain parameters. Once they’ve calculated their budgets, they will need to design a blueprint and create a brochure to go along with their petting zoo. We will continue this project after the break.
- Science –
- Grade 6 – students finished up their research on their cities and reviewed climate change from Indigenous and scientific perspectives.
- Grade 5 – students focused in on learning more about the various climate regions and learned about the importance of weather maps and how to interpret their data.
- Social –
- Grade 5 – Many students have submitted their finished videos and presentations.
- Grade 6 – Students finished their buildings and set up for a silk road market day where students trade goods and coins for historically accurate items. They then completed some reflection questions.
How you can support at home:
- Homework – Students who are behind on their novel study were asked to take them home over the break to catch up. They are required to be done reading their third week’s goal and the comparing character task before they return.

Learning Intention of the Week –
Grade 5 – The Silk Road
In this project, students explored life along the Silk Road by researching a historical location and discovering what goods were grown, traded, and valued in different regions. They used this knowledge to design and build their own market stands, helping them understand how trade worked and how advancements in farming and technology created new opportunities for jobs and exchange.
Students also developed an understanding that trade along the Silk Road went beyond physical goods. They learned how ideas, traditions, religions, and technologies were shared between cultures, shaping societies over time. Through this hands-on experience, students deepened their understanding of how interconnected communities were in the past.
Grade 6 - Elections
In this project, students explored the structure of the municipal, provincial, and federal levels. Using provided resources, they built their understanding of key terminology and the processes involved in the different elections.
Students then applied their learning by creating a multimedia presentation designed to teach a younger audience. Whether through animated videos or narrated slideshows, students practiced communicating complex ideas in a clear and engaging way, strengthening both their understanding of government systems and their ability to share information effectively.
