What a good week at the pool. Students had a lot of fun swimming with their peers.
Highlights of the Week:
- ELAL – After finishing up our instructional writing unit, we started working on short stories skills such as Good Beginnings and types of conflict. Next week we will be working on story planning.
- Math – We used base 10 blocks to build numbers and regroup them. We then practiced adding using base 10 blocks, expanded form, and standard form. We will be practicing adding decimals and solving word problems next week.
- Science – Space Unit
- Grade 6 – Students finished up their planet posters this week. If they are not finished, they will be coming home for homework next week. Some students who finished their posters early spent time researching current events in space.
- Grade 5 – We spent time reading Indigenous Star Stories this week. Students were split into groups to read and brainstorm about their stories. They created a visual to accompany their specific story in their visual journals.
- Social
- Grade 5 – After learning about what an ancient civilization is we learned how civilizations can rise and fall due to internal and external factors.
- Grade 6 – We learned about the different groups of people in ancient Athens and their role in society.
How you can support at home:
- Homework – students were sent home with addition practice and good beginning story writing work
- Math – work on basic math facts and friendly numbers within 100
- ELAL – reading out loud with your child

Learning Intention of Week: Math – Conceptual Understanding of Regrouping
Students used base-ten blocks to model regrouping of values to clearly see how numbers are built, grouped, and regrouped. They reviewed trading 10 ones for 1 ten (or 10 tens for 1 hundred), this developed a strong conceptual understanding of how addition works and why regrouping is needed. This helped students make sense of place value, solve addition problems accurately, and explain their mathematical thinking with confidence.
