We had another awesome week at TRS. We are taking advantage of the weather and trying to get outdoors as much as possible!
Highlights of the Week:
- ELAL – Students continued to work on sentences this week. They looked at the different purpose's sentences have; declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory. We looked at simple sentences and what a subject and predicate are. Students also practiced combining simple sentences to make compound sentences using conjunctions.
- Math – This week we worked with coordinate grids plotting points and describing their location and movement. Students practiced translating shapes to different coordinate pairs on the grid.
- Science – this week students continued looking at the Particle Model of Matter and worked through a “melting ice” experiment. Students explored how temperature increases or decreases movement and changes the arrangement of particles.
- Social -
- 5: We started a research project focusing on different ancient civilizations. Students are guided by a research booklet to fill in and will be sharing their findings with each other at a later date.
- 6: Continuing our work on democracy we learned about municipal elections. This will continue leading up to election day where we will take part in Student Vote where we will cast our own ballots along with hundreds of other schools.
How you can support at home:
- Homework – Students will bring home weekly homework on Thursdays, taking about 15–20 minutes. It will usually focus on Math or ELAL, with the occasional unfinished classroom task. Weekly homework won’t be graded but will be checked for completion to help students build responsibility and prepare for junior high.
- Math – work on basic math facts and finish mystery picture plotting homework.
- ELAL – practice writing compound sentences using conjunctions.
Important Dates:
- Apple Order Pick-up – Sept 23
- School Council Meeting – Sept 25
- Orange Shirt Day – Sept 26
- No School – Sept 29/30
- Terry Fox Run – Oct 3
- Class Photos – Oct 9
Reminders:
- Snack/Lunch – We are encouraging students to bring grab and go snacks to avoid eating their lunches during snack time if possible. Please pack extra snacks for Fridays as the days are extended this year.
- Indoor/Outdoor Shoes – Please send your child with indoor & outdoor shoes to keep the school clean. We encourage students to wear shoes that can be worn during physical activities both in and outdoors.
- Weather – We will continue to have learning opportunities outside, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.
- Online Forms – Please complete the demographic, citizenship and authorization forms.
Learning Intention of Week: Math – Coordinate Geometry
This week, students explored coordinate geometry through quadrant 1. They reviewed what the x and y axis are and how to plot coordinate pairs. Students worked through various tasks to help with plotting and describing movement of points within the grid through translations. Students created mystery pictures on a coordinate grid and learned a new math game, Pokemon Grid Quest to practice their skills.
