Weekly Update - June 19

Congrats to all the grade 6 students who wrote their final PATs this week. We are looking forward to another week of celebrating our year together and making lasting memories as we wrap up some of our elementary school journeys next week.

Highlights of the Week:

• ELAL – Students worked on various visual journal pages to reflect on their year. Students also worked towards creating displays and videos for our grade 6 farewell ceremony next week.
• Alberta Champions Multimedia Writing Contest
• Congrats to Maeve who came in first place this year and Petra who achieved placement in the top 10. Maeve was recognized through the Alberta Champions Society during an unveiling ceremony for their latest Field of Fame monuments at WinSport. Congratulations to all participants this year!
• Math –
• Grade 6 – They completed both math PATs
• Grade 5 – Worked on their food truck projects
• Science – Students spent time coding using Ozobots and Scratch.

Learning Intention of the Week – Inside Out

Students watched Inside Out and explored the concept of the "Islands of Personality." They then created a visual journal page to represent the people, interests, activities, and values that help shape who they are. 

We surprised students with Pickle Party 2.0 to celebrate all their hard work while watching Inside Out 2!

Weekly Update - June 12

We are down to our final 10 days of school! We have a whole lot going on in the next couple weeks so please pay attention to dates and any reminders sent out. 

Highlights of the Week: 

• ELAL – We dedicated time for social emotional learning by identifying different emotions and connecting it with the film Inside Out. Students then created a visual journal page to create their own islands of personality and responded to writing prompts.  
• Math – Students spent time reviewing concepts from our year of learning to help prepare the grade 6 students for their PAT coming up on Monday and Thursday. Grade 5’s also spent time continuing their food truck projects.  
• Science –  
• Grade 6 – Students reviewed and wrote their PAT this week. 
• Grade 5 – Students spent time coding Ozobots.

Weekly Update - June 5

Things are moving quickly in the last few weeks of school. Just a few important reminders are coming up. We have our AMA Patrollers Picnic on Monday. Please ensure your child is dressed for the weather and on time for school.  

Highlights of the Week: 

• ELAL – Students are starting to finish up their novel study and work on connecting tasks to show their learning. Grade 6’s practiced and wrote Part B for the ELA PAT this week. Grade 5’s started a Food Truck project that they will work on while 6’s are writing and reviewing for PAT’s. This project crosses between ELA and Math. 
• Math – Students worked through probability this week and wrote a test today to finish it off.  
• Science – both groups wrote a Living Systems test today. 
• Grade 6 – Students finished their re-evaluating resource project, and many got the opportunity to build their designed devices. They also learned about photosynthesis and how chlorophyl helps produce sugars and starch. Students were sent home with a PAT review sheet this week. 
• Grade 5 – Students learned about plant transport systems this week and did an experiment with celery to see the systems in action.

• Grade 5 – some students have taken home their novel study to catch up 
• Grade 6 – continue the math review package for PATs from last and a PAT science review booklet was sent on Thursday.

Learning Intention of the Week – Science 

Grade 6 Science – Energy Resources 

Students explored renewable and non-renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear energy. They analyzed the energy needs of a community, selected an appropriate energy source, and justified their decision by considering both community needs and environmental impacts. Students then designed and constructed a model or device using recycled materials that contributed to their chosen energy system while demonstrating strategies for responsible environmental management. 

Grade 5 Science – Human Body Systems 

Students investigated the structure and function of a human body system, including the respiratory, muscular, skeletal, or circulatory system. They explored how the components of their chosen system work together to support overall health and body function. Students then designed and constructed a detailed model using recycled materials to represent either the entire system or a specific component, demonstrating their understanding of its purpose and operation.
