Weekly Update - September 18

What a wonderful turnout to the Open House and Corn Roast last night. It was so great seeing all the families and enjoying the sunshine together.  

Highlights of the Week: 

• ELAL – This week we typed up our paragraphs on the computer and practiced our typing skills on Typing Club. Students also learned more about writing hamburger paragraphs and had the chance to practice using intro and concluding sentences.   
• Math – Students continued to work with MathUp and also dove deeper into place value. We practiced representing numbers to the millions in standard, expanded and written form and even used base ten blocks. They also practiced saying numbers out loud. Students also played various math games involving place value. 
• Science – We started our matter unit this week and students learned about the states of matter. Students made visual journal entries outlining the characteristics of each state of matter and mapped the phase changes that occur between each state. 

How you can support at home: 

• Homework – we will start homework in the coming weeks. 
• Math – work on place value including decimals up to the millions and thousandths.  
• ELAL – encourage your child to read at home for enjoyment.

Reminders:

• School Forms – please make sure you fill out all forms sent out by the office. If you need help with printing, please let us know so we can send paper copies home. 
• Stampede School – forms have been sent home, please send them back as soon as possible! If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up at the following link - volunteersignup.org/3B8FD  
• Indoor/Outdoor shoes – please remind your child to bring their indoor and outdoor shoes. It helps keep our school clean. We also ask that your child wear appropriate shoes to participate in physical education safely.  
• Fidgets – We are asking families to help monitor the amount and type of fidgets being brought to school. Fidgets are learning tools that should not distract your child or others, make noises, or create messes. If you have any further questions, please reach out.  

Learning Intention of the Week – Banana Observations 

Students worked through the scientific method through our Banana Experiment. We asked the question, “How will a banana change as it begins to decompose over several days?”. We talked about the scientific method and how to make a hypothesis, list variables, record materials, follow a procedure, and then complete a conclusion. Students had to use the ABCDE’s of scientific drawings to observe and record the banana each day. The banana was left over the weekend where students then completed a final scientific drawing in their visual journals to conclude our experiment.

Weekly Update - September 11

Second week down and we are so excited for the rest of the school year! We were able to go on a few community walks and get outside despite the rain. 

Highlights of the Week:

• ELAL –  
• We learned about the different types of sentences and parts of speech this week. Students also worked on writing paragraphs about “What kind of person am I?” in relation to our novel Restart where the main character questions who he is after suffering amnesia. They also started a character sketch for Chase which we will add to throughout our novel. We spent time brainstorming good questions to interview people to get to know them. Students were then paired with a classmate and had to interview them and practice taking down answers. They will write this into a paragraph next week.  
• Math – We continued our work with MathUp and worked with protractors and coordinate grids. Students also learned and played more math games – Multiplication Squares and Farkle. 
• Science – We started science this week by learning about the ABCDE’s of scientific drawings through an experiment. Students observed a banana over the course of the week to practice making observations and including details in their work.  
• Journalling – we've been exploring a variety of journalling techniques to start our year (Zoom In / Zoom Out, Curiosity Chains, Mindfulness Maps). Students were able to journal elements of nature, including areas of the school yard and down by the river.

Learning Intention of the Week – Cardboard Self-Portraits 

Students spent the last two weeks working on self-portraits. They have worked through multiple steps to create their final product. We started by taking photos of each student and printing them so students could practice outlining or tracing the major components of their face. From there, students cut each major element out and used scrap paper to layer the different elements of their face using multiple colours. Once they finished their paper version, students used layers of cardboard to recreate their final portrait.
