What a beautiful week of learning and weather. We spent a lot of time outside playing cricket and going for a walk. Thank you all for the kind messages and support this week for teacher appreciation week. We feel lucky to be in such a kind community.
Highlights of the Week:
- ELAL – We worked on a whole school writing prompt this week. Students K-6 were given an image to write a story about. We also worked on personal narrative writing.
- Math – Students continued learning a variety of algebra skills such as using PEMDAS to solve expressions, simplifying expressions, isolating variables, and writing expressions.
- Science –
- Grade 6 – we continued our ecosystem brochures this week. They will be homework after next Tuesday. Students who are already finished started creating a food chain related to their ecosystem in Scratch.
- Grade 5 – students continued learning about the body systems and will be assigned groups next week to build a specific system. Please send any recyclable materials for building!
- Social –
- Grade 6 – Students finished up their social media Charter of Rights project and worked on a scavenger hunt when they were finished.

- PAT Review – we have had several comments and questions about PATs. We will begin review mid May and will be sending home review for Math and Science. You can access practice tests here: https://abed.vretta.com/#/en/public-practice
- Students will have plenty of opportunity to work on their reading and writing at school, however, here are some suggestions to support at home:
- Have your child plan a story in 10 minutes with a prompt/theme
- Give your child 20 minutes to write as much as they can towards a story
- Practice a preferred style of non-fiction writing when given a prompt and practice planning under time constraints (persuasive, comparative, instructional, friendly letter, etc.)
- What to focus on – grammar, punctuation, paragraphing, complete sentences
- Students are given 2 hours to write both a fiction and non-fiction piece of writing during the PAT. They will be given an overarching topic, such as Friendship to write both pieces on. Typically, students will take 5-10 minutes to plan and organize their writing topic for each piece and then spend the remaining time typing their pieces.
- TRS Flex Time – Wednesdays until 4pm in the library with Mr. B and Ms. Hassen
Learning Intention of the Week – Cricket
Students learned how to play cricket by developing and practicing important skills such as batting, bowling, catching, throwing, fielding, and teamwork. Through skill-building activities and full games, students learned the rules, strategies, and sportsmanship needed to participate successfully and safely in cricket.
