Weekly Update - October 9

We embraced the beautiful fall weather and had an amazing week at Stampede School! We were able to explore our big question: How do our responsibilities to the land and to each other shape the kind of communities we create and preserve? We spent a lot of time outdoors, exploring, journalling, exploring aritfacts and learning more about the history of the Stampede. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Day 1 – Students explored the Stampede grounds by trolley, visiting the Confluence and learning about the importance and history of this location. We also looked at some important statues of influential Calgarians. We also visited Union Cemetery where we learned about important members of Calgary’s history.
  • Day 2 – We had the opportunity to work with therapy horses and their amazing handlers. Students were able to meet the horses and lead them around.
  • Day 3 – We spent the afternoon building rafts out of found objects in nature to explore an early week inquiry of how long it would take for something to reach the Hudson Bay from the Confluence.
  • Day 4 – Students had the opportunity to explore some important art installations, the Rundle Ruins on a morning walk. We were also visited by Elder Grant for our afternoon where we learned how to build a Tipi.
  • Day 5 – Our final day was spent overlooking the Stampede Grounds from Scotsman Hill. We also had the opportunity to experience a Team Cattle Penning event at the Nutrien Center.

I would like to send a huge thank you to all of our parent volunteers who were able to join us throughout the week! We appreciated being able to share our learning journey with you.
